Quality Index
The Quality
Index is one of many possible schemes to gauge the
quality of the wins by a rikishi (i.e., it is more difficult to beat
highly-ranked opponents and therefore those are higher-quality wins).
This scheme was devised by Masumi Abe.
It divides the rikishi into categories with wins and losses receiving
points as shown in the following table.
Opponent's Rank | Added for Win | Subtracted for Loss |
|---|
| Yokozuna | 12 | 1 | | Ozeki | 9 | 2 | | Sekiwake | 7 | 3 | | Komusubi | 6 | 4 | | M1-M4 | 5 | 5 | | M5-M8 | 4 | 6 | | M9-M12 | 3 | 7 | | M13-M18 | 2 | 8 | | Juryo | 1 | 10 | |
Additional points are given to each Rikishi as shown in the table below.
| Accomplishment | Points |
|---|
| Yusho | +5 | | Jun-Yusho | +2 | | Sansho | +2 | | Kachikoshi | +2 | | Each victory over 7 | +1 | | Makekoshi | -2 | | Each loss over 7 | -1 | | Each Yasumi | -3 | |
Below the rikishi are listed both in order of
their Quality Index and their record through 15 days of the 2004 Kyushu Basho.
